I’ve been dabbling with photography for the last 10 years or so – first with film, then with digital. It started as a hobby and gradually grew into something much more substantial. It has only been recently that I took a leap and purchased more modern equipment so that I could capture images with a greater clarity and utilize more creativity.
My love of photography initially stemmed from a long involvement with oil painting. The creative working and re-working with oils to produce different results never ceased to amaze me. I’ve found that a digital darkroom has similarities to the magic of oils, and I enjoy painting with light as much as I did with a brush and canvas.
I draw inspiration from my love of the expansive wilderness that we have here in New Hampshire. I’ve been a hiker since I was a child, and my Grandfather and Grandmother were pioneer trail makers, living on the top of Mount Cardigan. Several trails still exist today that my grandfather cut in the mid 1900’s, including the popular Falling Waters trail in Franconia Notch, and the Sanguinary Ridge trail in Dixville Notch.
My uncle was a world-travelling professional photographer, and my cousin is a well-known photographer, painter, and landscape artist. So, growing up in such a family, I was exposed to many stories of exploration and of local history. This led me in later years to search for places forgotten today, but still described in old books. There are many hidden gems out there in the New Hampshire woods, and I have had many interesting journeys seeking them out in an attempt to capture them in a way that does them justice. Waterfalls and craggy ridges are among my favorite subjects, especially those long forgotten by many and far off the beaten path.
Chris captures the raw beauty and dramatic contrasts of the New Hampshire landscape through his talented vision. His pictures are inspirational works of art, compelling the observer to journey out and explore our beautiful surroundings.
